The BSE sensex closed at 16856, up 216 points from its previous close, and the Nifty closed at 5108 (provisional), up 65 points. The CNX Midcap index was down 0.5% while the BSE Smallcap index lost 0.9%. The market breadth was negative with advances at 525 against declines of 916 on the NSE.
